We hear it every summer................."Wait until (Insert corps name) adds their closer!" Then the respective corps adds in the closer..........and it does very little to move the needle if any at all.

It got me thinking, what shows have actually had a closer added late in the season that made the difference in winning a championship or moving up in scores/placement/s?

Only ones that come to mind is Phantom 2008, and maybe BD 2015 when Clara was added?

Any others?

 Blue Devils.... 2015.

Cadets won the San Antonio Regionals, and Crown won the Atlanta Regionals.. then BD brought up the young girl from their Blue Devils B Corps for Championships as featured performer in their visual closer., tweaked the drill/ music in their closer and won Finals Nite by convincing 6 tenths.... opps.'never mind, just noticed you mentioned them above.....

I believe we can also assess the closer ( musical and/ or visual ) as being important to perhaps solidifying mid to late season placement and perhaps not being subject to not being caught from behind by others at Championships.  Most Corps are adding/  deleting/ changing up things all through the season as they get judges feedback or it was in the plans to do so all along.

Imagine what placement changes we might see if Corps did not add/ delete/ change things up from what the show had in early to mid season... while other Corps continued to add their final closer. All that said, I agree with you that a closer add is typically not going to make a substantial difference ( although if Corps are tenths apart, it might make a difference between then ). By Finals, its typically all about cleaning and executing what you've had for much of the season, imo.

Funny thing about that is she was in the works all along. There is a video from BDs family day prior to the season starting where they mentioned identifying the young girl Clara from Blue Devils C. They just waited till finals week to add her in.

I'm not surprised to learn it was in the works. A lot of Corps add things to the closer late that was in the plans to do so by August all along. Its done also to keep the Corps marchers energized and excited all the way to Championships. Understandably.  Its always refreshing to know that the show is never really " finished ", until.... well.... its " finished "..... At Championships.

Star of indiana Alums from that era would likely know best.... but I believe Star was traveling back from a show performance competition in Canada around early August, '91 and was staying and practicing at Boston University's field, preparing for their next early August show in Lynn Ma. (George Zingali was born and raised in the Boston region & marched/ taught 27th Lancers ), and George came up with the brilliant and iconic " Cross to Cross " visual design around that time. But like I said, I'll defer to Star alums here if they might have it different.

Crown's hide-a-corps closer in '15 was a pretty cool change. Just not enough to beat Clara.
