The issue that I have is that the story is front and center in the opener. Musically the opener is wonderful and they balance the story with the musical demand. The rest of the show it kind of feels like the story, and thus a lot of potential GE, gets cannibalized for the sake of the musical demand. Story falls to the background and it's all about section features. Crown has had the most success when they can do both.

This is my general issue with shows that follow a traditional story arch. Known stories are predictable, we know what should be happening and have certain expectations going into it. For me, that removes some of the mystery and excitement. This is especially true when the story in condensed into a 10-minute field production with the other obligatory sections that need a place to fit in. While Crown is worried about nursing a storyline, Bluecoats, BAC, BD, Phantom, etc. are working on concepts that they can do WHATEVER THEY WANT with. As long as the concept is consistently woven into the show then the creative license is much freer.

When was the last time a traditional story-based show won DCI? Spartacus in 08?

Crown 2013, actually. That was indeed a story based show.

What story was it based on?

Easy; the DCI "Pooper Scooper" crew takes care of it.  My first year of teaching the town wanted me to be the 'pooper scooper' for their town parade. Had a band Mom get me out of it! 😂

Funny enough back in middle school I was in an organization that I forget the name of, but we did a punch of philanthropy and volunteer work. One year we poop scooped for the Fiesta Flambeaux Parade during San Antonio’s famous Fiesta festival and man the roars we got from the crowd as we moved through the parade were like a drug to me. I ate it up. (Not the horse poop, of course 😂. I’d imagine it’s not that tasty 😂).

I don’t know the exact story it was based on, but it was a cut and clear love story. Every movement made sense and fit with the intense and abstract feelings you have when you fall in love. The first movement is when you see someone you admire and you marvel at them endlessly. The second movement is the butterflies in the stomach when you interact with them and grow closer, beginning the fall. The ballad is when you fall in love and they become your entire world. This is when marriage comes. And on and on. It’s the perspective I take when I watch the show.

You're describing a THEME or CONCEPT that was turned into a story.

Correct. It may not have originated from a historical story, but it was turned into one. And a very effective and clear one at that. Still makes it a story show, unless you explicitly mean a historical story turned into a show like Spartacus or Camelot etc.

Crown 2013 is one of my favorites of all time. I certainly agree with you that the way they married the scientific world of Einstein with the emotional and even surreal aspects of romance and love was masterful. That actually supports my original thought perfectly. They took several themes and took great creative license to communicate them in a truly original way.

As my original comment says, I'm not a fan of trying to tell a "known" story in such a short amount of time. So yes, I am talking about a historical story that is already familiar to the audience.

Brilliantly done I would add since they had to cut a lot of the original content and make a coherent whole out of it, but that's what arranging does.

That's a really good point. I mean let's pick a cool word like "Exogenesis" and "Mynd" and develop our concept based on that. I know those two words have meaning, obviously, but it's abstract enough where you don't have to be so literal like you would in a story-telling concept.

I think a revamp of concept and design is really needed in the offseason if they want to play the game.
