Phantom Regiment 2024

PR percussion was good from my vantage point. Colts had a drop in percussion score as well. Different judges.

That would be my thought as well. .60 is a huge drop considering the scoring consistency up to this point. Colts have been pi** clean as well and it look like they dropped too.

My point was it would not be outlandish to aspire to overtaking Crown at finals week.

Weeeeeellll, I think people should pay more attention to what you say than what I say.

It. Just. Got. Interesting.

I'm certainly not arguing this point, and I'm not suggesting that top 4 is a goal. I've mentioned multiple times that I'm far more interested in design competence than placement, and this design staff is putting together a competent product and will continue to do so as long as they're together.

Do I believe Regiment will finish in the top 4? Of course not. But I think they'll be close enough to fourth that it's not outlandish to use that as motivation come finals week. And I think it's laudable that they'd be in that position.

The good news is PR has the design of a top 4. To make a serious push for 4th, PR is going to crack top 4 on multiple captions and the top 4 would have to take 5-7.  PR isn’t quite there yet talent-wise to do it, and besides, those top 4 are now entering an arms race where they start adding difficulty to boost their content scores. But def in coming years, PR could be in play, for sure!

On Crown:  This time last year people said Crowns show couldn’t compete, and yet it was 2nd at prelims last year. We are hearing judges are responding more positively to their show this year than last. So it’s a very possible scenario that Crown may start to push upwards later in the season again.

Even if not likely attainable, you still have to push for it. If you think you’re no better than “X” place, you’re likely to meet you’re own expectations.

Regardless of placement, go for it tonight, Regiment, with a passionate, electric performance that the crowd loves.

I don’t know what will happen. I started the pipe dream conversation because Turandot was in 5th place at Night Beat, and everyone said there was no way it would climb any higher. In the end they took 3rd, and the momentum really started in Texas. The show wasn’t that much different at the end, it was just clean and the musicianship was crazy good. Anything is possible.

While I would agree with this, it's not always necessary. No one will ever convince me that we (Madison) were more talented in '88 than Vanguard, Garfield, Blue Devils, and probably Cavaliers too, and possibly Regiment. We won. When you have a show like we had and a show like Regiment has this year, the design, the crowd excitement, and the judges' great feedback can propel you beyond what your level of talent might indicate where you should be. It can create a storm of great energy and joy amongst the membership that propels you even further.

Likewise, I doubt Regiment (in 1989) had more talent in their ranks than most of the corps they beat (3-7 place).

Now, I do think today is a little different in that many corps have very few, if any, local people, but member attitude can do so much.

Talent is super important, of course, but there are other factors that can lead to a less talented corps beating a more talented corps, even today (see 2023 Blue Stars).

It’s definitely not always the case.  In a season like this one where the top 4 have all been out performing their last years scores, they are all the top of the captions, and they have a ton of talent top-to-bottom in every section that allows them to flex content scores….it does matter. But not every season is the same.

None of this is a read on PR. They are amazing and have one of my favorite shows this year. I just don’t see an easy path to top four this year. But stranger things have happened. And Im supportive of the best shows winning.

I don't see an easy path for it either but would I say it's entirely impossible? No. It looks like to me Regiment has a ton of talent top-to-bottom too, and their visual design is absolutely better than Crown's. Two days ago I thought they were even with Mandarins and Vanguard, now I think they are closer to Crown than Mandarins or Vanguard.
