Of course, it's a good show and the judges are responding well to it, they are in 4th. If Madison was forth i'd be doing cart wheels down the road. But, when we compare it to the top 3 it's just not there on the design level, and that will hold them back. But, again, FOURTH PLACE - that's not bad at all. Not in the least. We are all just discussing are own opinions on the shows and where we think corps are going to place. Those of us who said they were 4th and have design issues have pretty much been proven right. Like I said earlier, if I could do anything I'd be a flag member in Crown's guard. I'd love to perform that book, and I wouldn't care whether I was 1st or 10th. Are we at the point where competitive means BD doesn’t go undefeated? In some ways I would say yes to both, but mostly to your 2nd question. Let's face it, the Blue Devils are the Gold standard in this activity. This doesn't mean you have to like or dislike all their shows, but they set the standard for performance and design and they have won so much that even beating them 1, 2 or 3 times in a season is a victory -- even if Blue Devils still win in the end. To beat BD is one heck of an accomplishment.
Popular Post DrumManTx
Some brief thoughts on last night watching at home. Bluecoats - I'm a huge fan every year so I'm biased, but just absolutely adore what they're doing this year. I think the biggest step up over previous years is the visual design and execution. They really outdid themselves, easily the most sophisticated and exciting visual program they've ever put on the field. This will be an all timer ballad for me, the combination of the soundscape and the drill is just.......wow. Love it. Will be a fun ride the rest of the season. 4th in guard is the only red flag I saw last night on the recap, I think they have a much better run in them. We shall see! Blue Devils - Incredible as always. I'll echo what a lot of other people have said, the clarity in the visual design in the front half of the show and less specific focus thematically are the only two big weaknesses in my eye, and of course that is relative when you're talking about the top of the activity where everyone is just absolutely incredible. I think it needs a little more than their typical over the season layering, but I know it'll turn into a juggernaut by the end of the season. Talent is off the charts. Percussion book is absolutely bonkers. Guard is incredible. Brass is great. Some great drill in the closing moments too where they're absolutely hauling it. Boston Crusaders - Early season I was definitely not super into this but knew they were gonna mess around with it so nice to see that my personal reservations are fare lessened. If I have any critiques, which again at this level are so minimal and tiny, is some of the glitch moments transitionally into and out of are still somewhat clunky. But better. The old closer was FULL of that, so happy that the new closer is much much much smoother. The opening moments I love, but it takes a minute for me to really see the glitch theme come into play. Talent top to bottom is off the charts, I can tell they're HUNGRY and ready to eat. Percussion clarity blew me away last night, I would love for these guys to get a Sanford this year. I still think they can play with this a lot, so excited to see where it goes! Carolina Crown - Of course they sound amazing, one of my favorite openers of the year. Everything firing at that first impact is perfection. Love the Wall-E front ensemble moment, great writing. Percussion weakness (don't care what the sheets say, they sound night and day compared to pre covid) are a thing of the past. The through thematic line of the show is still a big question mark for me, and not sure adding costumes and characters is gonna fix that. The Mackey is the biggest problem to me, the pacing and development of that piece is really off-putting, it sounds like someone who hasn't written for drum corps before. The added chunk compared to last time didn't help that either. I see people that say they're just not getting rewarded for marching and playing more than anyone else, but I don't think that's the case. There's some serious pacing and programming issues right now. Can they be ironed out? Yes. We shall see. Phantom Regiment - High octane rocket fuel. The energy is absurd, love the darkness and mystery of Moonlight Sonata, ballad is BEAUTIFUL, duet section is nuts, and the ending absolutely burns the house down. Super solid across all captions. Not much else to say other than I love it. I think it's on an island in 5th right now which would be their highest finish since 2012. Great place to be. Mandarins - I've seen some people that seem slightly disappointed at how they scored last night but I don't think there's anything to be sad about. Maintaining in the 5-7 bracket with how competitive things are these days is no small feat, and with a show this fun, just enjoy the ride. Favorite opening statement of the year. Guard is phenomenal, brass is great, and percussion are holding their own. There are a lot of corps who will flash into 7th or 8th and then disappear, but they're not. They're here to stay. Tons of great drill (love those pinwheels and the sequence in the ballad), music is super exciting, and just energy off the charts. Will be a favorite all year. Cavaliers - Some good changes for sure, just clean clean clean. My initial reservations about this show are still intact, but they're making good adjustments. Brass has some moments where they're really starting to click, percussion as well. Guard seemed a lot more on it last night than I noticed before. Show silks for the rest of the show look great. I hope the rest of their season is nice and smooth! Zephryus - Super super super impressed with these guys, great growth in numbers this year and some very solid teaching going on here. When they move up to open class they'll make a great addition. Keep doing what you're doing! 7
MarkHornGA
Rewatching Bloo from last night with not so tired eyes. The more I watch, the more I have an appreciation for the demand of this show on the MMs. 1. The spacing/listening/timing difficulty seems to be exceptionally high. They stretch the field quite a bit. 2. The cold attacks, especially on those staccatos, are precise and tight. As a drummer I can't speak to the level of difficulty to do this consistently across a brass line. I'm assuming it is something that sounds simple but is actually difficult. 3. These contras are on fire. They spend quite a bit of time on the back hash and they come through like sweet molasses. 4. The soloists are butter. There are other great soloists across the activity this summer, but the quality for Bloo is exceptional. 5. The drum break after the ballad (especially the bass line and that tenor/front ensemble sync-up) is pretty special. 6. Dymaxion (fourth movement?) is wild and edgy. What a great sound. 4

I had such an enjoyable evening, but how did you people in CST and EST do it? I was like, "Oh my God, it's 10:00 pm and I'm not in bed yet." LOL. They were in same position at Broken Arrow last year, finished 4th overall and 4th in brass. The world erupted with brutal criticism. Come Prelims, Crown was in 2nd then fell to 3rd in Semis, then won brass. I’m just going to sit back and watch and see how they respond. Reggi93
My brother aged out of Scouts that year so that's a favorite family memory as we are from STL as well! Silly me not hitting quote. 😝 Edited July 17 by Reggi93 Adding context due to my mistake

It'd be a fools errand to discount Crown's brass. I don't think anyone is doing that. The only thing I've seen is people saying BAC was doing to win percussion. I know nothing about percussion so a comment from me on that would be pointless, but I haven't seen anyone saying it's over for Crown's brass. If I had to put $100 down on who I think it's going to win the Ott, I'd place that bet on Crown. I think the other lines are fully competent to win brass as well, but I'd still put my money on Crown. I may lose that $100, but it's the bet I would make. Edited July 17 by Vuitton
