MomGuard
With so many great colors guards, what do we love about them and who will be on top? Which guards enhance the overall production the best, which are staged well, and which are the best written (unique, impressive & musical choreo)? Who is the most consistent and who is the most entertaining? I love color guard and there are so many great groups this year! Starting with the obvious, IMO- It will be the performance and consistency for Zingali between BD and BAC. Their styles are so different, and their programs really highlight the section. BD has literally created trick tosses we haven't ever seen and move so beautifully, Boston always has an insane skill set and show so much strength while still being effortless. Those 3 judges during finals week better have a microscope out there to see what both groups are bringing to the table. I have much so much more to say about all other groups, but I'd love to hear what y'all think!

MarkHornGA
I will start by saying that I am a recovering snare drummer. However, my appreciation for the demand, skill, and beauty of the guard has grown exponentially. Last year I remember watching a BD run during finals week and I just laughed out loud. My wife gave me side eyes. I guess she didn’t expect laughter during a DCI performance. BD’s guard had just executed a full guard rifle toss to perfection. All I could do was laugh. That sums up my thoughts on them. They are like a video game cheat code. I really love BAC’s staging of the guard this year and the blend of implementation. The end of the opener with the flags and rifles layered behind the brass is particularly stunning. Bloo is in the mix as well, they rely a lot of weapon work this season, which I like, but sometimes they can get lost in the big picture. 3

That was lovely. Bloo is SO GOOD this year!!! Taking huge risks starting with big isolated tosses from count -5 lol They are SO well coordinated, after watching their family night performance, I fell in love. I hope they win it all this year tbh, my favorite Bluecoats ever! They have had one of the BEST FLAG LINES in DCI for a long minute too. That team can absolutely win the Zingali, they certainly have their own style and seeing how consistent they've become with their weapons, they are definitely on the map! My only worry are the big crazy tricks BD and BAC are doing, it might give them more credit over time once everyone is clean. Bloo has some big advanced skills too, and I hope they get credit for them. I do think the guard has more room for bigger performance qualities and communication- I think that's the one thing their guard competitors have over them- the confidence from the whole team. I would love to see their personalities, they are GREAT technically and I want them to LIVE! They can be the best guard in DCI and make history for the program, they need to believe it's possible. I certainly do!
LabMaster
BAC guard this year has a tremendous amount of integration with brass and percussion. Not just visual integration like a section weaved within guard sections but part of the work the guard does is with brass and perc. I don’t know where the extent of integration is at that level. Plus the guard does all their other amazing skills along with being so visually musical. Mind boggling at times. Many guards are doing such incredible things with use of all equipment and a high level of dance as well. Thank you guards for such a treat.

I always liked how the Cavies usually have big moments of putting guard and horns together with some serious drill.

I think that’ll fall more into the GE category than actual Color Guard “skill”. But yes, cool nonetheless. 👍
spacewill
As a former BRASS guy, I detested Guard in High School. Even as of 4 or 5 years ago I would only glance at what they were doing. Now that I've been introduced to more WGI and really paid attention, there are shows where I'm looking at the guard more than the corps. When we watched the BD show in Ft. Collins, I spent 70% of the show just staring in awe of what their guard was doing. Granted, we've seen their show 4 or 5 times so I didn't feel I was missing much from not looking at the corps, but WOW, I am thoroughly just blown away by the talent of Guards across DCI. They are doing things today that are just mind blowing to me. And again, I'm a dumb brass player who actually understand throwing 7's and 8's now! Oh I forgot to say that as much as I love that opening brass hit from Mandarins, where I say Wow is when their flags do that first whole unit flag sequence. I say WOW every time and just get chills!
