LabMaster
These guards are so so good. I also look for how integrated the guard is with the overall drill and other elements; brass and percussion. Boston imo, is far more integrated with guard, brass and perc movement and equipment. I also think that a top guard, this level of guard, I should not be hearing guard members counting out loud their entire show. And I did hear it. Overall though, these kids are incredible with everything they are tasked to do with equipment, dance and movement on the field. Mind blowing. Their phrase length and drill demand far outweighs what others are doing. My guard friend tells me that Crown and Boston are the only guards really exploring challenging choreography. While BD and Bluecoats are written more for GE than the guard caption. I’m guessing the judges are feeling this way as well since Boston and crown took 1&2 this past weekend in guard. There's no denying that Crown Guard is extremely talented! Tarpon Springs Drum & Bugle Corps lol Their opening flag statement is FANTASTIC! I feel like their choreo is a bit repetitive in that they keep the same velocity throughout the whole show and it starts to feel very much of the same throughout. I also think they could be doing more with their movement, the talent is there. Especially considering BD is really leaning into their movement skills this year (as they should, as always). Boston has a great blend of both equipment and movement AND utilizing those rings adds an extra layer of responsibility for performers, and coordinating with others, but they make it look easy! I also think of all "Big Rifle" sections, Boston's is the best IMO. Only thing I will say is I hope they point those marshmallows in an all white costume, unless flexed is what's intended, that's it! The musicality is *chef's kiss* I agree Boston and Crown are programmed to highlight the guard for sure, but Phantom and Bloo are SOOO well written overall! 🔥🔥

Dome shows are hard for guard, the echo and reverb makes it difficult for timing. I can appreciate a dut dut to make sure a phrase starts together and tosses go up and down at the same time. 🤷 By Allentown I'm sure they'll have those little tweaks engrained in their brains to stop saying things out loud. It was outside. Not SA. This was a non stop counting set to set. Very surprising. Disappointing too.
MomGuard
....but that's how color guards get clean? Lol!!! Counting is great for checkpoints and everyone's trying to clean up for the big regional. Not sure how the cleaning process is disappointing. They won't be counting by finals, but that's just how they've been doing it since the 1900's lol

That’s not where you clean. That’s where you show how clean you are. Count out loud at rehearsal, while you clean, not during the performance of your skill and expertise.

Nah, I'm okay with them counting mid season if it means their safety and consistency.

Not for a guard that is thought of as elite. It shows to me, they are not as good as they like you to believe. I have not heard others guards count during their performance. At rehearsals and warmups, sure. Get it right. Get it clean. If you’re counting out loud during your performance (and not just one or two mm’s) you’re not at the elite level. But maybe that’s just me and my expectation.
