88 was hell on Earth.  Valves would dry out.  Put your horn down in the sun for a minute and you were getting burned.  Grass evaporated from practice fields.   Fun...

87 was a bit "warmish" as well lol. I'm just glad the kids now have things a little more organized and healthy.

My band had a new campground my senior year that had an alternate field on a marshy area.  It was considered the 'cool field' because if you jumped hard enough in spots, you could see the land ripple a bit.  Marshy.

Anyway, brass and saxes were kept on the main field to run drill (because our drill was together for the section of the show we were working on that morning). Other woodwinds were sent to the practice field to work on music.  As they're clarinets and flutes and pics...they were allowed to sit/kneel I guess as the story went.  All we knew was all of a sudden, they were all running back like hell over the hill screaming like Jason popped out of the lake in his mask.

Turns out the marshy filed was infested with jumping wolf spiders.

Those stupid things were all over the rehersal area in Orlando. Evil creatures

All I know is during prelims in 1980 in Birmingham I thought I was going to die.

The light breezy cotton uniforms I was boasting about literally wrinkled in the heat and humidity

Unless I attended in ‘79, I think ‘80 was my first experience viewing drum corps. (Getting old) My high school band director took us to the ole gray lady, Legion Field in Birmingham. I was forever hooked.

You owe her a debt of gratitude, no?

I'm still sunburned from watching every corps that day.
