not 2026-related but I came across this 2023 finals brass tape and…ugh what a great show. Yeah it served as an excuse to just rewatch it again but what a freaking hornline.

side note: I think the vast majority of the overall DCI community forgets that that show was 2nd in GE and a hundredth of a point from winning music at finals (plus a 19.9 from the brass)

Oh entirely.  When Avon did it they had the brass doing the big ringing melody and the woodwinds wailing away on those runs underneath it.  And everyone was "Harloff...Crown should do this."

So I humbly accept the position of 10th creative consultant for Crown. 🤓🤣😅🤣😅🤣

Presenting their 2026 show, "The Bat," DCI is proud to present, Carolina Crown!

You know, I was there and I didn't see any bat.  Not saying it wasn't there but it wasn't obvious.  What I did see was an issue with PR getting their props out the tunnel, something happened and they just stopped feeding their stuff out the tunnel.  Maybe the tunnel manager stopped them due to the bat, I don't know.  Anyway, they wouldn't let crown start bringing their stuff out until PR got their shower curtains out, and that took forever.  When crown was allowed to start moving their stuff on field, it went pretty fast, except for one prop that seemed to get stuck for a moment, but that was quickly resolved.

The problem was all the props incoming and outgoing had to use the same tunnel and there wasn't enough room for two way traffic.

And if they delayed anyone because of a tiny little bat, that's totally weird.  Who's afraid of a little bat anyway.  They aren't going to swoop down and suck your blood, the worst they could do would be maybe poop on you, but even that is highly unlikely.

Yeah. Zero danger from the bat.  But people freak out over them because of the "it could get caught in my hair" type myths.  It was probably more a "wtf bat?" moment.

That said, bats are awesome and a show that delves into the truth about bats and bat symbolism through cultures would be fantastic.

They are fascinating creatures.  Have you ever stood on the bridge in downtown Austin Texas in July at dusk and seen the largest colony of bats in N America emerge, swirl around your head for several minutes as the assemble, then all fly down river in a black cloud to hunt for insects?   It's an amazing sight!   They also have a cool bat museum under the bridge.

Have not.  But it is now a bucket list item.  Hah.

We did go to a cave in southern Indiana for an emergence one night though. Its amazing.

Nah. Like all sorts of real things about bats.  Visuals like a cave emergence. Swooping fluttering sounds (mic'ing the flags like Bloo did could do this).  Heck you could do a Cavies and hang a drummer upside down for a feature!

They could do Strauss' Die Fledermaus of course.
