thats because until the late 80's, D2/3 now Open Class wasn't needed to fill out the top 25

Correct. That is what killed 27th Lancers. They really needed the $ from top 12. Granted the writing was on the wall, but I recall George B saying had they made finals, they could have made it another year.

Oh I know. I was trying to be nice because I didn’t want people to think I was knocking the accomplishments of the Open class corps that make it these days. But in reality, by showing up, the best Open class groups are guaranteed to make it.
