That show from Phantom in '09 was a visual, guard and design disaster.  But conversely it also had awesome music book that is still a fav of mine.  They deserved that placement, and the constant changes to try to salvage the visual design did not help.  It was waste of a phenomal talent level that summer.

Thinking about '26, I'll take a SWAG.

1.  Bloo

2.  SCV

3.  Boston

4.  Phantom

5.  BD

6.  Crown

7.  Blue Stars (and not far behind)

8.  Cavaliers

9.  Blue Knights (a big jump in performance)

10.  Troopers (transition from the wildly popular shows of the last 4 years will hinder moving up)

11.  Colts

12.  Spirit (and they just might pass Colts, good show designs 2 years in a row and talent rising)

I agree regarding 09 Phantom and I have a unique perspective on this since I was driving an RV that summer for BAC.  The first show of 09 was somewhere in Ohio.  PR beat everyone out of the gate, including Boston, Crown, Blue Stars and a few others.  After the show, Boston designer Brian Murphy (The Corps of Temptation) got back into the RV and I asked him why he thought PR beat everyone even though they were so rough. He told me that DCI panels typically judge the first shows based on last year's placement, and the judges would correct themselves over the next few weeks, which is the exactly what they did.  I never forgot it.

Phantom Regiment placed 1st in '08 and dropped all the way down to 9th in '09.

I recall their fifth totally different show design that year was the best. Lol. 😂

.........I didn't catch the sampling period was from (only) 1999 - 2025 or I would not have chimed in.

🤷‍♂️ I'm quite certain we aren't the first posters in DCP (and prior, RAMD) history to make a comment beyond the scope of the original post 🤪

If true, they should be summarily dismissed from the judging ranks. However, in a subjective activity there is no way to prove it.

A judge could rationalize almost any placement save something nearly inconceivable like Pioneer beating Blue Devils in brass back in the day, or Indiana football winning the football championship 🙂

Doesn’t DCI consistently maintain that the judges are experienced experts in their captions and thus the only individuals on planet Earth qualified to assign scores?  If this is true, then they certainly wouldn’t assign a score based on the placement of the Corps the previous season!?!
