Just ask what did the Soprano sax and Oboe REALLY add to the shows last year besides being able to say “we did it”. I personally don’t really think it added much of anything. It seemed like it was being done just to say it was done. The sax pretty much sounded like a trumpet by the time it came through all the electronics. The oboe sounded a little more like an oboe but for 30 some bars was it really worth it? That’s the other question. And all this comes from a retired professional woodwind player. (insert mandatory “I don’t hate the kids, designers or “I understand change MUST happen” comment”. 2 Quote
Jeff Ream Posted March 4 Posted March 4 honestly last year, the thing that annoyed me most was.....trombones and brass ensmebles coming through speakers 1 Quote
KVG_DC Posted March 4 Posted March 4 The sax last year actually communicated the theme somewhat too being 'uninvited' and ultimately integrated into a variation on a gathering. 1 1 Quote

Like in Mackey's The Frozen Cathedral. You hear the bones gliss in that piece and you can almost see sluffs/avalanches on Denali. 1 Quote

It being subtle makes it effective. Most of the glisses I’ve heard from the corps seem to have gone to the sledgehammer school of arranging. 1 Quote
wolfgang Posted March 6 Author Posted March 6 When BD used trombones too much in their Shakespeare show with obnoxiously bad FFF gliss after gliss, I suspected many corps would copy that. Unfortunately, a number of corps did copy that. Great corps. Swing and a miss on that effect for me (yes, I was a trombonist). Although, all tbis got started in 2005 or 2006 by Tarpon Springs at BOA with their running show. Then it was fresh. Now, it's trite. 2 Quote
