waliman4444 Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Spanish is not my first language, but a week has gone by with explanations of the half time show at a fingers touch..If english translations were intended I'm sure they could have been provided..I think the whole point was to draw attention to a culture that is as American as any other by being as authentic as time would allow..With all that was happening on the field, reading translations might have caused me to miss some of the great visuals as they rapidly crossed the screen..Sometimes a little discomfort is cool..imo...peace 4 2 Quote

It depends upon how one frames the question, to wit: https://www.babbel.com/en/magazine/the-10-most-spoken-languages-in-the-world My question is, why does this matter? Will this ranking change from Semis to Finals if Spanish does a good job and Chinese has an off night? judge your sheet and the show of the day 1 Quote

The TMZ poll was hosted on X, a socmed platform that heavily skews to users who are politically conservative, male (60%+), and white. Maybe not the most neutral audience to ask about a Puerto Rican performer singing in Spanish. I would bet that 80% of respondents did not watch either performance. BOT city. 3 Quote

For accuracy sake, would seem like a good reason to me. I did not post the rankings of the top 3 or 4 " most spoken languages in the world ". I merely responded to the rankings that perc2100 posted. Is a big deal ? No, of course not. Is inaccurate info ok to remain as is ? I don't believe so. English is the " most spoken language in the world ". So there it is. For accuracy sake... no more, no less Quote

I believe the majority of DCI audiences would prefer that the theme and messaging in today's Drum Corps shows be cogent and clear to most in the audience.... or at least be open to different interpretations. I don't believe the majority of audiences would choose to be confused or have no idea what your show was about. I wish DCI would do some polling on this to confirm my take on this. Yes, most of us by now have been accustomed to FEEL the show's wonderfulness...in brass playing, in percussion playing, in dance, in movement, in Guard performance.... and for some thats been perfectly fine, But by no means to all. I'm pretty certain we all have talked with people that have said to us they loved the show's performance, but " I have no idea what the heck the show I just watched was about ". For some historical perspective here, prior to the introductions of themes, attempts at messagings, yearly change of attires, etc all we fans had were the " feelings " for the shows. We looked at the performances and had " feelings "" on what corps executed in performance the best, and " feelings " about how much we liked or disliked the music played, and so forth. We were never asked as fans in the stands to " think " about the show's theme and its meaning, as there was no " thinking " required of us. With the introduction however of themes, various attire to fit the themes, and the show's messaging, we were expected to " think " about the show's themes and its messaging in performance. At least that was MY expectation anyway Otherwise, why have themes, messaging, new attire every year, etc to begin with ? Has the introduction of themes, messagings, new attire every season, been a success in enlightening us with the themes & messaging ? Think about that. You decide . Finally, we've all heard that traditional uniforms do not fit the themes and its messaging well if we retained the traditional uniforms, That keeping the traditional uniforms would be i "incongruous ". Ok, I get that. But if your shows theme and messaging is lost to the majority of fans ( and I suspect, more than a judge or two ) does it really matter if in the end of performance the show itself was " incongruous " to most ? In that case, if confusion of the show's theme was the aftermath, did it really matter then what the corps wore ? Just food for " thought ", along with our feelings on todays Drum Corps shows and their themes, messaging, attire. Are some shows more understandable than confusing ? Sure, I think so. Is it better to understand a show, than not understand most, if not all of it ? I thought the answer to this might be an easy answer. But its not, now is it. 1 Quote
