I'll mention brass things, but guard and drum people feel free to chime in.

For trumpet, a sound that's full without being strained or thin. Robust is the word. Even some world class corps struggle with this.

Baris/euphs, full low register without veering into a blatty sound.

Mellos- playing both in tune and within the ensemble in the upper register.

What little horn/drum/guard, or even marching things impress you that not all world class corps excel at?

I like seeing the joy on the kid's faces while performing.  Boston stood out to me in that area when I saw them in person at the Mt. Sac show.

A nice horn pop at the right time never gets old for me.

A tuba feature that ends a note or two lower than expected.

When brass soloist(s) aim their performance toward the press box.  It makes far more sense to me when the visual performance matches the music performance.  And we will still hear you even if the mic fails.

I'll cite by example:

The BD soloist in Both Sides Now hitting that high note gently but with a quarter rest delay to heighten the drama.

The audacity of having snare drum solo happening in a Blue Knights show and the verve the kid brought to it every night. (I think it was Because...)

The massive rifle toss across the field in SCV 2000 at the climax of Adagio for Strings.

It's just those little moments that are as small as an individual member doing something in a brief moment, but it puts the drama through the roof.

A brass line that can project a full warm sound while playing pianissimo.

Mine is no surprise.  Im impressed most by complexity or difficulty, be it music, drill, or choreo  For me, that’s what elevates the activity and makes it like the Olympics of marching arts.

To this day, I still don't know how SCV managed to disappear the Phantom and then reappear him..My intellect says GOOD MAGIC TRICK, but on a football field?..That was impressive..peace
