whystarwhy
I saw this EXACT question somewhere once, but I need to find out for myself... In the opening of Star '91, there is a beautiful sounding theme. The view switches to a camera that's right behind a horn player facing backfield playing...BUT....the horn looks like a soprano, but has a more softer tone...almost that of a mellophone. Did Star '91 have 12 flugle horns by any chance? If those are sopranos, I must have something wrong with my hearing. I've tried following the horns in question around the field, and I just can't seem to catch them up close again.
Medeabrass
Star only marched sops, mellos, baris, euphs and contras. Donnie Van Doren always made the sops stand next to the contras in the practice arc to make them concentrate on having a darker sound. kevingamin
The sound of the sops is in part to them facing backfield during that opening line, but mainly due to the fact that they're Star sops and sounded better than anybody else. copland12001
When they turn front field, I do hear a slight difference hinting at Sopranos. Wow, almost seemless transition to the mellos as far as tone goes. I am impressed.
