MsBusDriver
No smiling No make-up A hair-net ala Ruth Buzzy. Lots of shoe polish! Oh and not only metal flag poles (#9), but, metal flag poles with PIKES! -
Russellrks
Playing the most difficult passages while marking time with high leg lift, ankle two inches above the knee. Flags were carried in leather holsters and they did presents all over the place. Then they really started pushing the envelope with those slams. Jd83
I remember that stuff. I didn't go through inspection in drum corps, but did in winter guard. I am definitely old school!!
sburstall
How about when percussion practiced on 2x8s set between 2 stands with rubber covering them? No carrying snares or tenors then. I remember when spats were cool. Our corps had spats designed to look like buccanner boots.
Kaboom
Remember when... There was only one yardline on the field. The back sideline was opened for off the line. Dropped equipment was a penalty THE STARTING GUN! No mallets in the drum section. Marching tympani melodies! Jim Ott writing "ballsando" on his charts when he want the sound past FFFFFF and in tune! KABOOM!! Edited January 31, 2004 by Kaboom
LancerFi
First of all Happy 39th Birthday! I beat you by a few years but it's about the same era. Did anyone mention: the "gun going off"? the "high mark time all the time and the prance"? a "pistol"? a "pike"? the "flag holster"? the "flag carried in the middle of the body"? "trick flags" ala 2-7, only 6 to begin with? "making the rifle line"? "right shoulder arms/left shoulder arms, present arms" "trying to get 135 then 128 members? we were hard pressed to fill mainly the horn and drum line each year! the "drill down"? or maybe corps' still do that?! "paying $150 for tour and selling eggs and Ziff to subsidize the rest" and "raffle tickets" "pennies on your rifle strap in both summer and winter guard" and/or marbles where the wooden bullet used to be"? learning the meaning of "a hash mark and a pylon"? So much has changed, however so much has remained the same, the comraderie, the dedication, the harder than hard work, the bus rides, the running back to begin again, the blood, sweat and tears....yup, so much has stayed the same!! sburstall
Company fronts that were actual pushes, in-your-face, moves. High mark time company fronts.

Our corps had spats designed to look like buccanner boots. we did that in the winter through 1988 because of all the drummer wannabees trying out. sburstall
Boy, after reading all of these in the past, today's drum corps kids have it real easy.
