Dave Burkett
I'm trying to locate Bass Baritone bugle from 1957 - 1965. I'm particularly interested in Holtons. I prefer G -D, but will consider G - F. Old Ludwig Bass Baritones are of interest also. There is an unusual configuration that looks like a miniature Contra that I'd like to locate. Made by Holton I'm told. Whaley-Royce Euphoniums, particularly in G - D. I also need an E rotary attachment. I watch EBAY, but would appreciate any leads. contact me at davidlburkett@netscape.net Thanks. Jeff
"There is an unusual configuration that looks like a miniature Contra that I'd like to locate. Made by Holton I'm told." It is my understanding that Holton made a bass horn in the key of C as it was illegal to have a horn two octaves below soprano. I believe that the Hamilton Post (Yankee Rebels) Sr and Jr corps along with the Air Force Academy had them. Scout House also had an Eb bass horn to go with their Bb bugles. There were somewhat like a shoulder mounted euphonium from what an old timer told me. Perhaps this is what you seek. I would really be interested in learning if this is true. Also when these horns were ruled illegal and thus the key of G only rule was enforced at some point likely in the 1950's. I do have rules from 1937 that do mention the no two octave below soprano rule, making a contra illegal, and there is no mention of key. It would be great to plug some holes in the history of bugle development. Good luck finding these. Will let you know if any come to my attention. old vanguard
Critter 1701, I knew that I wasn't the only one who was aware of these old instruments I just bought one of the old Holton over the shoulder bass baritones. Brass finish, with case. It plays very well. It's pitched in G - D. No rotary valve. It needs some TLC, but I'm enjoying it. The USMC, Reilly Raiders, Milstadt Crusaders and Kankakee Lancers all used these - long ago. RE: The horn you offer - Please PM me with particulars (pictures?) and asking price. Thanks. PS The email address in my original (old) posting is no longer valid.
