Who are the greatest baritone soloists in drum corps history? Why?

Some that come to mind are

Dave Lang, Colts, early-mid 80's

James Hosmer, Phantom Regiment, late 80's

The dude from Everybody Loves the Blues, Blue Devils, 1983

The guy that battled the bass drum line, Suncoast Sound, 1985

Baritone Soloist Monk in Pictures at an Exhibition, SCV 1986 or 87

Me, Geneseo Knights, 1987 B) (Hey, I hit a double-D at the end of the opener!)

Oh, almost forgot:

Jim Miller, Emerald Knights, 1983-84

Clay Waccholz, Pioneer 83-84, Madison Scouts 88(?)

Dean Smith, Florida Wave, mid-80's

I totally agree! That is simply the greatest drum corps bari solo I have ever heard - live or recorded. He made it sound sooooo easy. Just awesome!

That would be Mike Wessling in 1986 (a good friend of mine). Man I hope he doesn't read this. His head doesn't need to get any bigger! :P :)

That's an easy question to answer....

Doug Kenyon!!!! AKA Pooh Bear

This guy can wail like no other. He has to be the loudest baritone player EVER. Read that last sentance again and don't even think of replying otherwise. He's currently playing the the Renegades. If you want to hear the best there is, I suggest you get to DCA Finals and check him out. Don't be shy to ask for autographs either! ^0^

I know he marched with the Blue Devils in 1981. Not exactly sure where he marched other than that.

:rock::huh::tic::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I don't know how he stack up with some of the folks mentioned here, but the first baritone soloist to make an impression on me was the Kilties' Bill Mudge in 1968-1970. Beautiful, rich sound. Played the little solo riff in Choo-Choo all three years and had a very nice solo in the 1970 version of Mac Park.

I'll chime in for Pooh Bear too.

and for two guys I marched with:

Dale Warren and Rick Moss, late '70's Guardsmen.

Rick is the guy who played the terrific solo in "Tiger of San Pedro" in '79.

I still think he is the most awesome baritone player I ever heard. (and a fabulous trombone player)

I'll chime in for Pooh Bear too. and Clay Wachholz.  Just listen to '88 Mad Scouts and his solo in Malaguena.

I also love the bari solo from Bohemian Rhapsody Madison '78

Umm...that would be 1979 and the two guys were Dave Ranthum and Perry Smith. Perry also played the solo in God Bless the Child in 1978.
