And now, without further ado, "'Round Midnight":

As night descends on the City, endless urban energy and emotion reveal the heart and soul of a place like nowhere else. The City uncovers the grit, the chic, the romance, and the pain that are part of the full range of options and opportunities explored by the Syracuse Brigadiers Drum and Bugle Corps in their 2005 program, “’Round Midnight”.

The musical production is arranged by Wayne Downey (brass), Dave Glyde (battery) and Giff Howarth (front ensemble) and is primarily based on the interpretation of New York Voices, the contemporary vocal jazz group renowned for their surprising takes on the edgy and classic sophistication of NYC.

The production opens with an original composition by Wayne Downey. It is a new work that expresses the power and excitement of the towers, the canyons and the streetscapes.

The hip “Orange Colored Sky” reflects the optimism of new-found relationships and the possibilities the City offers when the workday ends.

But it is Thelonius Monk’s smoky “’Round Midnight” that is the centerpiece of the program. Sometimes mournful and lonely, sometimes uplifting and positive, it suggests the turbulent emotions of a relationship, shaded with the variety of experiences the City offers as night deepens.

In contrast, the “open-all-night” joy and delight of the City at play find themselves unmasked in “Baroque Samba.” This piece, by New York Voices arranger Darmon Meader, is filled with energy and hope as it parties toward the urban dawn and a fresh day.

We hope that you will find the wild and wide possibilities of life in the City as intriguing as we do.
