My DCI Review (1978).

Recommended Posts

Ive said previously how much I appreciate that 78 Bridgemen hornline.  They were working against two things.  First, it was the year directly following the disqualification so that worked against them.  Second they must have decided to play it a bit straighter in 78 because most of the antics were way toned down. As a result a great hornline was underappreciated.  They just get better with every listen.

All right, we agree on something! :)

Sue,

I marched with some Oakland Crusader people who joined Bayonne in 79.

Yup, I knew several of those folks in '78. Alice--can't remember her last name, but she played the judge with the clipboard in '79--was a member of Oakland's cymbal line in '78, and we sat next to each other on the bus for second tour that summer. There wasn't much for Oakies to laugh about, competitively, in '79, but we did have fun pointing out our pals in Bridgemen! When Alice yanked off her judge's cap, let her hair hang loose and hopped into that guy's arms, we just roared!

The way Bridgemen snares phrased and shaped their beats were like no other.

Mom :grouphug:

According to legend, they also all used different techniques, different sticks, different drum tuning and even different sticking.

But there was not a tick to be found. ^0^

Lee (Bayonne fan)
