some old corps photos

Recommended Posts

Hi Linda,

The photo of the corps in the long line in Europe is in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens, in Scotland. The Gardens are slap bang in the middle of the city centre and Edinburgh Castle is up out of the photo on the left. The photo of the corps playing in the bandstand is also taken there. My guess is you were heading to the bandstand in the first picture. Hope this sparks some happy memories.

Thank you. As background, Alberta All Girls had performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1972 and 1973. The Edinburgh Princes Street Gardens and bandstand photos are of 1972. I wasn’t there those years however I toured with the girls in 1977 as a marching instructor.

We departed for our drum corps tour of Europe July 1 1977, spent the month of July in the UK, departed for the continent on August 1 1977, performed at the Rose of Tralee Festival late August, arrived back to Enfield England late in the day September 2 1977 and made our way home September 14 1977. It was a 10 week tour, a 76 day tour.

I decided to compare our itinerary with my 1977 travel log. Of the 76 days very little changed except on August 5 we didn’t perform in Antwerp, we traveled to Nijkerk. On August 11 we didn’t go to Vienna but stopped in Innsbruck. On August 25, we were to perform in Stuttgart but had a free day in Frankfurt. We were to perform in Scotland September 7-12 but instead took a train from London to Edinburgh on September 7, arrived 2:30 pm and departed 11:30 pm that day. It was a wonderful free day! Donna and I spoke of our 1977 Edinburgh visit during our 2011 reunion. We both agreed it was a great day!

We visited the castle, toured the gardens and I went to as many museums and art galleries as I could during the 9 hour stay in Edinburgh. As a student of art history for years, I was in complete awe. Had we performed in Edinburgh, I may not have taken these endearing photos in 1977. Had this sparked some happy memories? Absolutely! Thank you.

This was taken from the castle on September 7 1977. At the bottom of the photo is the seating area for the bandstand.

I apologize for being off topic in my prior post. At our 2011 reunion, I had procured a CD of 675 photos of AAG from 1970-1975 of both AAG A and AAG B. Right beside the photo of the long line in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens in Scotland, is the following 1972 photo I wish to share. There’s an audio recording of AAG performing with a pipe band in 1974 and a beautiful video recording of a stage performance in 1991 where AAG alumni had performed, once again and for the last time, with a pipe band

In the "small world" category, my uncle is over visiting from Scarborough just now.

By the way, the bandstand is still there and is the centrepiece for the Edinburgh New Year celebrations. Would love to hear a drum corps playing from there.
