Pieces never done by Corps

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what pieces everyone would like to hear a corps do. The only requirement is that it can never have been done by a corps before. Search Corpsreps.com if you are unsure. You can spesify entire shows or just one piece. Anything goes, so long as none of the pieces have ever been done before.

I personally would like to hear:

Symphony #3 by Penderecki

Akhnaten by Philip Glass (would require narration though)

In Evening's Stillness... by Joseph Scwhantner (it would make a great eire balid)

Nocturne #2 in Eb Major by Chopin (Phantom, I'm looking your way for this one)

Allegro Barbaro by Bella Bartok (another perfect one for Phantom)

Symphony #4 by David Maslanka

Original music by Boilerman_05 ^0^

A show using pieces from John Williams "An American Journy" album:

Celebrate Discovery by John Williams

The Country at War by John Williams (Drum solo)

Song for World Peace by John Williams (Balid) :worthy:

For New York (Variations on Themes of Leonard Bernstein) by John Williams

No theme or political message intended. Just great music.

Prayer of St. Gregory--Hovhaness

Any of Barber's "Essays for Orchestra." (Phoenix Regiment did these, but no div I corps yet.)

Soundtrack from Krull--James Horner

Anything from Mahler 1,2, or 5

Symphony #3--Robert Jager

Scenes from the Louvre--Dello Joio (Vanguard Cadets did this, but I'd also love to hear a Div I corps tackle it...SCV, SCV!)

"Requiem Aeternam" from John Rutter's Requiem

Will add more as they come to mind...off the top of my head:

Hang Gliding, Maria Schneider (Metheny-esque, great piece of "symphonic jazz", for lack of a better term)

Dance You Monster to My Soft Song, Maria Schneider

Trumpet Concerto, Arutunian

75 Seasons Suite, NFL Films (melodic, stylistic changes, great for a DII/III corps)

Dos a Dos, Karl Jenkins (right up Troopers' alley)

Tam O'Shanter Overture, Malcolm Arnold (Pioneer, why have you never played this?)

Royal Fireworks Music, Handel

Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare, R. Strauss

Feierlicher Einzug, R. Strauss

Beulah Witch, Don Menza

Variations for Trumpet, Don Ellis

The Tihai, Don Ellis

I'd also love to see BD do a concept show themed on improvisation...featuring improvised solos that can add a chorus or two if the soloist is on fire...and other improvisational features, musically and visually...a different show each night...now that would be one for the ages!

Also, I second "Prayer of St. Gregory" - gorgeous!

My first thought was Falla- El Sombrero de Tres Picos...but Allegiance Elite did it. Some big corps should do it. Like Madison...

OK, I thought of one...Polonaise No. 6 by Chopin.

I'd love to hear Regiment play "Bydlo" from Pix @ an Exhibition.

How about something by Ralph Vaughan Williams?

I sing in a new/recent music choir, and I often come across choral works that I think would work for a drum corps show. I loved SCV 2000, and I keep hoping that other top corps will try similar programs.

Here are some ones that I wish I'd get to see on the field someday:

Samuel Barber Twelfth night

Giles Swayne Magnificat

Frank Martin Mass for Double Choir, especially the Kyrie and Sanctus

Jaakko Mäntyjärvi Canticum calamitatis maritimæ or Psalm 150 in Kent Bob Treble Minor

Galactic Empires by Holsinger.  Mixed with a little bit 'o Planets and Stargate music.  :worthy:

I think I've heard traces of Galactic Empries in a few Cavaliers shows from the 90s and a bit in '00 too. But, they never listed it. Same thing with the McTee stuff they throw in.

Speaking of which, any of McTee's Soundings would be awesome to hear. :)
