Bradford Girls

Not sure but I think you mean 'Brantford Girls' which were originally St. John's Girls Drum Corps from Brantford, Ontario. The name was changed back to St. John's Drum Corps when the corps went co-ed.

A list of inactive NJ corps that I compiled a few years ago for a project that I was working on at the time. Not 100% on the accuracy of the information. Project dropped due to finding information on all these corps from more reliable sources is next to impossible. List compiled from Corpsreps.com.

Finally someone mentions the Chancellors! I marched with them from 73-78. One correction though- they were based in Bricktown which is in Ocean County, not Ocean City. Lots of people got that confused as I remember. I really had a great time way back in the day.

One everyone has missed. The 1976 and 1977 Garden State Circuit Champions, the Long Island Kingsmen. Guess we confused everybody by being from NY and winning the "Garden State" Championship. We also marched in the Eastern States Circuit for several years with all of those PA corps, as well as being members of UOEC, DCE, and, of course, DCI. Early on, we were members of the Sounds of Suffolk circuit on eastern L.I., then the Long Island Circuit and the Greater New York Circuit.

Wonder how many corps were members of all of those defunct local circuits over the years?

A couple more corps I don't think were mentioned:

Smithtown Freelancers (Wayne Downey's first drum corps exposure)

Selden Cadets

Babylon Islanders

Oceanside Legionaires

And I have heard or marched against all the corps that dave mentioned. Drum corps on the east coast in the 60's and 70's was huge. It seemed like there was a corps from every town in NJ/NY/PA....

My first corps, the Livingston Hilltoppers, sponsored by the VFW...competed in the 63-64 timeframe. NanciD's great site actually has a few pics of them from DCN. She is still posting 63 issues....I think the corps main year was 64 for competition. I was in the feeder corps as a 10 year-old in 64.

The Imperial Guardsmen were formed by a group of parents that broke away aftter the 64 or 65 season...I forget which...sponsored by St Raphael's RC church. They competed in the GSC starting in 65 or 66.

The Hilltoppers were reduced to benig a parade corps...I stayed with them through the 67 season, when my dad (a VFW member) finally relented and let me join the Guardemen for 68. Even he finally saw that the Hilltoppers would NEVER make the field.
