Start giving to corps relief gas funds now!

Experts: $4 a gallon gas coming soon

http://money.cnn.com/2005/08/31/news/gas_p...dex.htm?cnn=yes

Just read some troubling news on CNN in the link posted above.

I think that this is potentially the biggest threat DCI has ever faced. The BOD at DCI either needs to either rework the current touring system to something more regionally-based (at least until gas prices go down), or find a way to help fuel costs even more. I know they're trying, but this also MUST include us giving as much as we can to our corps; ESPECIALLY to corps that are not as financially well-to-do as others. These kinds of prices could threaten the very lively hood of our activity.

Katrina has shut off supplies by 25%, with no real answer as to how much damage has actually been done or how long it will be before supply returns to normal. Here in TN, gas went up by .35 overnight and is over 3.05 in southwestern VA with several shortages being reported.

Please contribute however you can!

Agreed. I think most corps could do with a little less glitz (or new amps/keyboards/bells/whistles/etc) and a little more commonsense budgeting. Especially now.

Or, drum corps start adjusting your budgets now. If you think you need new uniforms, you don't. You need fuel. Is your instructional and administrative staff willing to take a pay cut? Let's hope so. You need fuel. Should member dues rise? Just a little. You need fuel. Proper management and budgeting RIGHT NOW, will avoid most fuel-related problems next June.

And if there's ever a time for responsible tour planning, now's it...

I really appreciate the call to arms for gas donations.

I think it's funny that you manage to say it in such a way that you're telling DCI something new. Pushing your agenda of regionalization based on gas prices seems logical, but to me it's pretty disingenuous. <**>

Now I'm not a financial guru, but if you look at the NYH Unleaded futures (yes, I know it's diesel mostly), here's what's listed:

Now I know it's seasonal, but I don't think the sky is falling yet. Gas is a big expense, but so is food when that goes up. I think that the BOD has very clearly addressed the fuel issue, probably in ways that you didn't hear about. The corps knew what price to expect, and they weren't surprised AFAIK. No doubt that gas sucks when it is pricy. But the board also put into place Regional D1 touring.

In addition, gas prices were more expensive, by a lot, in the 70's. All you have to do is adjust for inflation.

Yes, it sucks that gas is expensive. Yes, help your corps. But don't base a fundamental change in the activity on a commodity price. If anything, doing more shows will help pay for gas.

Spirit performed at more shows than just about every other corps out there this year. I don't know where you'd fit more shows. They do have to have some down time along the way, even as limited as their's was.

Well, #### me and call me Joan of Arc.

I do believe that you're accusing me of being faux-naïf?

...and what's this about my "agenda of regionalization"? To that I respond:

Whoever said, or where have I ever stated, that I even AGREE with regionalizaion?

I believe, for purposes of being fiscally frugal, that until gas prices drop (this is IF there is an EXPECTED RISE in gas prices, LIKE THE ARTICLE STATES) that regionally-based touring would be better, especially in the long run, for the books.

And, did I not state in my previous post that "I know they're trying"? Well, well, drumcat, I did indeed. I never said the sky was falling NOW either, did I Chicken Little? I was pointing to the information listed in the article, which states that in the near future, gas will likely top 4.00/gallon. At the least, one should be thinking ahead, considering the crisis in the gulf region now and instability abroad.

Also, I think that gas in relation to drumcorps is much more than a "commodity price" to be considered; the activity is based around touring the country in a very large fleet of buses and semis.

Thanks for the history lesson, but I do know all about the oil crisis in the 1970's. Now, tell me what it has to do with what I'm talking about? Surely you wouldn't be creating a sieve out of your own logic by pointing out that in the 1970's, DCI was largely regional?

I'm not trying to be a martyr for a cause, I just said that people should be donating to gas funds...at any rate.

I really appreciate the call to arms for gas donations.

I understand your concern. Yesterday in Menomonie, gas was $2.69 a gallon. By noon today, $3.25. I know that the hurricane and the oil rigs in the Gulf are causing this upswing, but can we expect oil and gas prices to come down in the coming months?

This situation does merit study by DCI, corps directors and staffs and show promoters. We're all in this together.
