patblamo
When was the last time a corps seeded first going into Finals did not win?
MikeN
<on soapbox> 1983. <off soapbox> Mike (don't bring up blah-blah-blah-tie-cakes, 'cause the top seeded corps didn't lose in those cases)
glory
Seeded when? There have been corps that were first at quarters that didn't win. The winner at semis is a surer bet for finals lately. HH
Slow Adam
Who won Semis in 88? I dont think the random draw would have been talked about so much in subsequent years had the semis winner won finals....
liebot
http://www.fromthepressbox.com/1988recaps.html Scouts won semis. By 1.2. The results just weren't announced at semis. Just the bracket that each corps belonged to. edit: the competition actually closed the gap on scouts from semis. So i guess the controversy shouldn't have been so big. drumcat
Wasn't Star 92 in first at Quarters, and undefeated thus far? Worth note, I'd say.
ACE-Driving
I don't think they were undefeated but they'd been pretty strong all season. The same can be said for Blue Devils 1995 and 1998. 1993 Star only lost 2 or 3 times in the season... 1987 Vanguard and 1988 BD were both undefeated going into Championships and then both lost at each. liebot
star came in 2nd six times earlier in the season in 92. BD came in 2nd 3 times in 98 (including at DCI east a week before finals) BD was in fact undefeated going into quarters in 95 where they came in second. they ended up third. the same can be said about BD in 88 going into semis (there were no quarters, then). they came in second at semis, third at finals. BD seems to have a penchant for fading late in the season (including the two ties they were involved in in 96 and 99 when they were caught from behind). mobrien
Madison appeared to be an upset winner in 88 because of the blind draw, though obviously they weren't. I'd say that the last 'surprise winner' was PR in '96. Not too many people saw THAT coming.
MikeN
Even then, BD didn't "lose." The last time the 1st place corps from Semis *lost* Finals was '83. Never happened since the all-build-up scoring system. Never once. Mike
