So you are saying that if you think that you KNOW someone hates a corps, and they take the time to post their thoughts, expressing that dislike, it's ok to jibe back with a comment like "thanks for your poor insight". Two wrongs and all that? If you don't like what someone says, praise that which they jeered, don't jeer them. Makes you look a LOT better... just so you know.

Point taken - but it's disquieting to see so many of you jumping to the defense of an tactless review, yet condemning the equally immature response. ALL shows have merit. I'd never openly trash ANY corps - which makes ME look better.

Just got back... three hour drive... will give full review tomorrow.

Nutshell version---

Teal Sound - great opener.

Magic- great opener, but rest of the show is way over their heads. They're in desperate need of some basic block.

SW= This is a semi-finalist. Good concept and execution.

Spirit - No longer Cavie-Lite. They have rediscovered themselves and could have their best ginish in 18 years if they'll beef up the drill.

PR- This show is a beast. With more field coverage, it'll be third, or second. The battery IS that good. The hornline could become legendary. Guard's got a long way to go... not in talent, just time to implement all the nuance, silks, costume changes, etc.

Cadets- What a waste. This is as talented a hornline as they have ever had. Their encore was an absolute delight. The show was more of a, dare i say it, BAD DREAM. The props, the voice, the props, the voice. Please tell me this was the pilot version and not the finished product. I know we said the same thing last year, so there's still hope. The amped singer wanders around the field in a black dress. It wasn't effective. It was just plain distracting and strange.

More tomorrow.

Ok, so, I just got back from the show... didn't stay for scores, sorry (had to escort and out of town friend home...) but, here were my impressions:

1. I'm angered that, at what is technically one of Spirit's home shows, the Cadets were the corps doing the encore. That just seems wrong to me. I mean, we did the encore their last year. Whatever.

2. Phantom is AMAZING. That's it. No really, 'nuff said.

3. Spirit's show is a split for me. On one hand, what they play and how they play it is wonderful. The show is done well. However, for a 30th anniversery show, I can't be but a little irked that they didn't play Georgia. They did play Old Man River, so I'll give them back 1/4 a point. :P

4. The Cadets. I'm just gonna say it, I thought the show was terrible. And it's not because the singing or the narration, which I didn't like, by the way, but the singing only bothered me slightly (about how much Crown did in '04) but the narration, as with any narration, has, does, and always will bother me. But I disliked the show because it was just... THE SAME. First, the uniforms were hideous... sorry, but they looked kind of neat with the reverse thing last year, but now it's some sort of cloud pattern on the back... not diggin' it. Second, WAY too many props... I mean it's ridiculous... every member of the corps minus the drumline (even the drum majors) carries something onto that field. It's mind-boggling. Anyway, most of the show's music is just kinda, blah, mostly because it's the back drop for narration (the tea party scene) or the singing. The drum solo, while I LOVE Cadet drum solos notably the tenors, seemed WAY too much like last years... just not as impressive as I was hoping. And finally, the ending was the same as last year, and while that is understood seeing as this was a sequel, just like last year, the ending was lacking. So all in all, not impressed.

So, in MY mind, my opinion, the group should look like this:

Phantom Regiment

Spirit

The Cadets

Southwind

The Magic

(Teal Sound)

Yes, I put Spirit above Cadets. Like I said, I was entertained much more by Phantom and Spirit... maybe even Southwind (their show was actually really good).

great review! im glad there are people here who arent afraid to be honest about their opinions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with beating cadets tonight I believe PR's percussion is still undefeated... impressive after going against cavies and cadets.

Cadets scored a 70 point something last year in their first competition, and lost by 2.7 points to the Cavies in their 2nd competition. As we all know, they won DCI last year pretty easily at the end. Scoring over 74 tonite means they are ahead of last season's Championship pace. But it's waaay too early to speculate beyond that.

Huh? The first show last year for Cadets was June 17th, in Elizabeth, PA. They scored a 70.300. The Cadets

were in Fort Mill, SC on June 22nd and scored a 74.700 to the Cavies 78.450. It looks like they are ever so slightly BEHIND last season's championship pace.

I'd put them pretty much the same as last year, to be fair....

not very good at the review thing but here goes.

Teal Sound - I really like their uniforms. This is my first time finally seeing a Div. 2 corps. They had some really nice moments and some really weak ones, but it's June. They have a tremendous amount of potential. Hornline was pretty decent. The battery although I'm a hornline guy is what stood out to me in this group.

The Magic - Very strong opening statement. Went very quickly downhill. Lots of work needed. not likely in semi-finals this year either.

Southwind - WOW!! The opposing high - low brass uniforms make a really neat effect in the drill....although when coming out the gate, and the way their shakos are, I swear they looked like the KKK. Anyway, I think they might possibly be more enjoyable than last year. Strong semi-finalist corps. They had a very good quality hornline sound.

Spirit - WOW, just WOW. I was not expecting this. Clearly the crowd favorite tonight, of course it's pretty much a home show. What a hornline this year, they have some volume, and some really good quality sound. THey have some pretty decent drill to go along. The opener was extremely good. Ballad was beautiful minus a bari-solo mishap which I'm sure won't happen to often. Third tune was very enjoyable, what a soprano line. One of the best of the night honestly besides the solo in this tune, but I heard the guy had an ulcer inside his lip...OUCH. The closer was very enjoyable also. Bari solo was awesome for blues in the night....nice balance between the 2 pieces(Blue in the Night and Blue Shades). They built into each other nicely and not like a MEDLEY. Once again, I gotta say, thats a really good hornline this year. I can't wait to hear them later this season when they have a better handle on this pretty tough show this year.

Phantom - LOUD - powerful hornline, better than usual drill, phenomenal battery. This is a VERY DARK show. While it is enjoyable to me as a trained musician, I think the general dci fan might think its a bit far out there.

Cadets - well I don't like to say negative about any corps, so I'll simply say, they have an amazing hornline, but you dont' get to experience it much during the show. The encore however, could peel paint of a wall. I actually enjoyed last years show quite a bit even with it being pretty far fetched. They had a good horn book and good drill. This year, all the voices takes away from that unbelievable hornline*possibly better than last years believe it or not*. At the beginning, it reminded me of a pop concert. The vocalist welcomed the crowd and said something along the lines of thanks for coming out tonight and hope you enjoy.

I definitely had Phantom higher than Cadets tonight. Most enjoyable was Spirit though

Thanks for the update but I do remember watching them at the Shriners in '72.

First year back in Div 1 or equivalent in a very long time - how's that?

Jim

Ah! I remember the wonderful Blue Stars guard in their shorts!!!! :)
