what would be YOUR last straw

Recommended Posts

If you no longer enjoy it then certainly that's a pity, but it seems silly to keep coming back to a forum devoted to this activity just to tell us how cranky you are.

What other recourse does a fan unhappy with the way things are progessing have? Writing DCI? Calling directors? That doesn't seem to do much good. Why not come to a board designed for discussion and debate about the activity to find other like-minded individuals?

Just as there are plenty who enjoy the way things are going...so, too, are there those that are not.

The "just leave" argument is just as close-minded at the trolling arguments that argue that everything now is "bando". Both suffer their own unique form of tunnel-vision.

bawk, keep in mind who I was responding to. Constructive discussion, even between parties who will always disagree, is exactly what DCP should exist for. I have no problem with hearing that some are unhappy with amps, and other decisions that have been made, and have never used the "if you don't like it, leave" attitude. Why did I do so in this case? Because clearly our friend morganhill is not interested in constructive dialogue. He is a flamer, nothing more.

I would leave if corps shows started containing Satanic ritualistic human sacrifices because there was a scoring caption for it and without it a corps would get a zero in that caption.

Edited for personal reasons.

I guess at the very end of the day...why would someone keep on attending something they just do not like? Discussing what individuals like and dislike is fine, but a lot of this hardly qualifies as "discussion"...just whinging and trashing.

As for the idea of debating...it's been my own opinion as one who does like these forums (even if my own POV is 180 from most of my era) that we waaaay overrate our impact...shows go on...people cheer....new fans come out...etc...while people here act as though their opinions are representative of the general audience.

They are not...they are the opinions of those who post here, of coruse, but in the grand scheme it is hardly a general consensus.

.. bagpipes anyone?

:P That would be excellent! b**bs

More seriously, after marching and being a fan for 30 years, I'm already gone. Haven't been to a show in years, and have no plans to go. What finally sqeezed the last bit of passion for me:

Dancing 80% of the show

Costumed characters

Lycra

Now I understand several corps use amplified singing and narration. No way do I want to see that. I'd rather see theatre.

Woodwinds? I'll still be reading along here, but DC will truly die then.

This activity attracts tens of thousands of fans, and thousands of marchers every year.

Look at how many corps are gone. How many thousands of kids and fans are gone with them. That signals loss in interest. Obviously there's a problem here that some refuse to see.

Everyone mentions woodwinds, but haven't they been allowed in I&E? I was on tour and don't remember, but how did that go over. I'd imagine not so well.

Unless it stops being entertaining I wouldn't stop being a fan of DCI

But it just so happens if MOST of the things on the list were added it would stop being entertaining anyways

Yes, many corps are gone, and I can't imagine any fan out there who thinks that's a good thing. What's harder to gauge, though, is what could have been done to prevent the loss of those corps. Is it the result of changing the product on the field? Mismanagement? Changes in society? My guess is we could find examples to support all of the above. Yes, fans leave every year, but new fans are added every year as well. I choose to take the glass half full approach, because I think the drum corps activity is still something special, even as it exists today.
