pags Posted September 14, 2006 Share Posted September 14, 2006 I'm shocked that no one from Blue Devils has put out there the signature piece: 1986 Channel One Suite- 1976 and 1977 were very, very good, but this is the definitive version. No one else can touch this piece because of how the Blue Devils defined the performance of it. I would also say that 1976 Blue Devils is the definitive version of Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor. 1992 Blue Devils is the definitive version of When a Man Loves a Woman. I consider a "drum corps standard" to be a piece that has been played in several decades by many different corps, including a number of different Open Class corps. Standards include things like Malaguena, Mambo from West Side Story, Children of Sanchez or Simple Gifts from Appalachian Spring. Fanfare and Allegro, Medea, Blue Shades, Young Person's Guide, Autumn Leaves . . . I wouldn't put these in the "standards" column yet. Here's a few more for your consideration: Battle Hymn of the Republic I'm partial to 1986 Troopers. Rhapsody in Blue 1985 Madison. Somewhere Over the Rainbow 1975 Cavaliers (Yeah, I'm a homer -- sue me). Spanish Fantasy I'll go with 1994 Blue Devils. Summertime from Porgy & Bess 1988 Star. Bacchanale 1991 Phantom. I'll take '86 Suncoast any day on this one, even if it's biased. Even though BD only played Commencement, it wasn't as faithful to the original as Suncaost's was.
