sburstall Posted October 2, 2006 Share Posted October 2, 2006 Given how many corps have auditions and camps and such in different areas, and membership from all over, does it matter? There are two sides...One side says that, for example, the NCAA does just fine with many schools that are geographically oriented. State U doesn't have hardly any athletes from the U's State, but nonetheless they are the State's favorite. In other words, recruiting is national/global, but they are all brought together artificially under State Tech or University of State. The other side says that you don't care about the Denver Blue Knights, but the Blue Knights. The Cadets are from some unknown realm in more ways than one, but their "location" is of course "Sponsored by YEA!". I'm not sure where YEA is, but it sounds like a happy place. So where do we stand? Chicago/Rosement, Rockford-Loves Park, Allentown/Dover/San Antonio/etc... Corps rightfully follow the money, but is there any point in recognizing where the corps hall is anymore? Removing the affilative status of corps is similar to just calling a professional sports team by it moniker, no matter where they from. Example, would anyone from say Mars, who has never seen a pro (or amerture) sport team, would know that the Lions were from Detroit? Or Mariners were from Seattle, or even the Wolverines were from the University of Michigan? You need to remember that these civil entities are what supports, and in many cases with university organization, sponcers them. Why would it be any different with drum corps? Ergo, if the Cavaliers get a large amount of thier sponcership AND support from Love's Park and Rosemont, Illinois, then they should names themselves the Love's Park/Rosemont Cavaliers, or return to being called The Chicago Cavaliers. If Cadets/YEA now get the majority of support from Allentown, PA, scrap that YEA name and be proud you're the Allentown Cadets. I think having one plain black "Pearl" or "Dynasty" sticker on a drum is fine. But anything else is too much. Rocketman Posted October 3, 2006 Share Posted October 3, 2006 I vote no. Even when money is involved. We had a situations with a corps I was working with in getting "local" money. They wanted to know how many "local" kids were in the corps. In reality, the percentage was, and I believe IS, very low. Anything less than 51% is not a majority. I know the Regiment, at one time anyway, was at about 5% local. So, does a corps need to be "from" somewhere? I think that I agree with David Letterman, who said "Have you noticed how nice our weather has been lately since we got rid of Pluto?"
