The Tsar
We also did it again in 94. In fact, we had two seperate pits (sort of). Three (sort of).
DCIcharlie
Southwind did it in 2002.
year1buick
Three (sort of). Yeah, I started the show near the backfield one, manned by the bass drummers. They had me cracking up on every run-through, putting words to the four count start.
CozyChopsCom
The '94 Americanos had their pit on a stage, placed around the hash/slightly forward, c. 35-yd. line, stage right. Seems like it had a small wall at the back of it also. I do recall it was a rather elaborate stage for a corps of 28. It was one of my favorite 'Canos year. The '94 Americanos and Marion Cadets are an example of phenomenal entertainment with fewer than 30.
Jeff Ream
it can be done, but a lot of it has to do with the visual needs. smaller ensembles do it more often, because in actuality it helps balance things out upstairs. i am surprised with amps fewer corps haven't done it
Geoff
Three (sort of). Is it still a pit if it's on the back sideline? :)
Bongomar
We did it with Rhythm Stars in 2005 and 2006...it thought it worked fine. Jubal did it too in 2004.

I still remember that when we had our 64-man "Rock Paper Scissors" tourney that year, the Final Four consisted of me and three bass drummers. :P
Divalish16
Pits can't do it these days because they don't want the marching members to trip over extension cords and speaker cables. :P
