some old corps photos

Looks to me like the rifle line there had to overcome the after effects of the left over chicken macaroni and cheese leftover extravaganza of distustingness we all had to endure a few time from the food crew sometimes. I remember cranking a few sometimes that could literally wipe out the immediate snares to my left and right when I was in, and God help any unfortunate tenor drummer that might have to do a "walk through" as we marched forward sometimes...

I thought you were supposed to hold them untila drum judge got close....

Having spent a bit of time in a similar Protective Mask or more commonly called a "ProMask"

I cannot help but be impressed. The visibility in the newer masks is extremely limited. To march

and handle a rifle with one of the older masks on is nothing short of amazing. :worthy::smile::smile:

What the _______????

I was lucky enough to see this show several times, as a fan in the stands it went like this,

The last part of their show, Woodstock, the contra line breaks rank and attacks the national squad and the flag, shots ring out(snares), sirens and whistles go off (puppet was one of the sirens (mellos), its a roit! here comes the tear gas( they had colored smoke bombs or flares they released), the rifle line in gas masks repel and arrest the contras.(stand and clap and cheer and go nuts)

it was a crowd pleaser! and if you do not know much about this corps they were like a top 12 corps in DCI terms, very good!

Great instructors, great hornline, drums, guard, very well schooled corps.

That show is still to this day in my top 10, it is one of those shows you see that has that special something about it you remember forever.

puppet has posted other photos of this part of the show somewhere where you can see the smoke floating across the field and the contra attack and arrest, and, hopefully will add a little more to this than I can.

OLT, Flight of the Valkyries , a true Dreitzer arranged classic!

so the show had a bit of a political undertone (for the times) to it? Waaaaaaaayyyy back in the 70's our activity was being "controversial" as well? Go figure. Imagine if DCP existed back then.

Political Overtones… hmmm. You know, not all drum corps Waaaaaaaayyyy back then were afraid to step out of bounds.

Garfield that same year did their peace sign and even handed out a libretto at their shows. Blue Rock had that wacky elephant thing going on. And the if you count the uniforms of the Muchachos and the Bronx Kingsmen they probably took a lot of GE categories by just showing up in those uniforms.

BTW we also did West Side Story complete with running away from the cops, knife fight and death scenes - the following year 1973 was the Perils Of Pauline and yep all the bells and whistles. And at the risk of blowing my own Mellophone, I think Carmen Cluna, who designed those shows, was way ahead of the times.

yes, I was going to mention Garfield and the peace sign and librettos, and you had Cavaliers doing a circus theme and Madison doing their Scouts in Fantsyland show, and Des Plaines doing West Side Story with the rumble scene and death sequence.

some "purists" called 71 the death of Drum Corps!

Your 72 West Side Story show is still my favorite West Side Story I have seen a corps do yet!

Your 72 corps looked and sounded more mature, the hornline really rocked.

People, St. Rita's along with Blue Rock would have been in the middle of things at that first DCI finals, if they had chosen to go, they were that good.

I do agree, Cluna was way ahead of the times!

Cluna, Dreitzer and Peirrloux, what a combo!

And the big let down for us that year was the World Open. We just fell apart at the prelims. 16th Place - Came back though at the Danny Thomas Invitational the next day … that's mello me on the left in the front rank.

This is a shot of the horn line just after Woodstock beginning our exit West Point Alma Mater.

40 horns the contras off to the side being arrested for attacking the American flag section - I think I have a shot of the rifle section in their gas masks. What a great day after the day before… sigh. Oh, to be young again.

Puppet

Actually Puppet if you remember a 2.5 American Flag penalty kept us from being in finals.

Calling Mike Davis! Time for a refresher course on 1970 Garfield, the peace sign, and White Rabbit!

I apologize in advance for these low-quality scans. They're actually scans of photocopies; sadly, I didn't keep the original publications, only these copies. Mea culpa!

Freelancers (I'm pretty sure the guard wore this uniform in 1991):
