Drum Corps (truly) International
What started years ago as a small competitive group of local bands and instrumentalists have grown to a proud organization whose accomplishments, achievements, and fan base reaches all over the globe. While the fans may range from many different nationalities, the members themselves (for mostly financial and geographical reasons) are predominantly from North America – although currently DCI does boast members from 15 countries. As current affiliates join each other to prepare for another exciting season of music’s major league, I wondered, as a current expatriate, what are the opportunities for musicians around the world to be a part of a similar organization? With technology, the world is shrinking every day, and participation in activities like music especially helps bring people together. Recently, I was watching the local news and there was a story about drumming in the desert.

For the first time in 18 years, the town’s Independence Day parade next month will feature 10 drum and bugle corps, youth groups, politicians and civic, fraternal, veterans and service organizations.
“I want a parade to add to the town’s 35th annual Independence Day celebration this year, and it appears that we’re well on our way due to the hard work of a parade committee working with the Braintree Friends of the 4th Committee,” Mayor Joseph Sullivan said.
Former drum corps veterans John Robinson and John Grandy are the parade’s co-chairmen.

James Campbell, a Provost’s Distinguished Service Professor and director of Percussion Studies in the University of Kentucky School of Music, is one of only four drum corps legends to be elected into the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame this year.
"It's a great honor to be recognized by your peers and to share this award with so many friends and colleagues in the drum corps activity," said Campbell.
Professor Campbell is responsible for much of the modern look and sound of today’s drum corps percussion ensembles. With a legendary background as an instructor and arranger for the Guardsmen, of Schaumburg, Ill., and the Rosemont Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, of Rosemont, Ill., from the 70s through the 90s, Campbell’s drum corps credits include winning three High Percussion Awards and two World Championships during his tenure with the two corps.

After having toured through the US five times with borrowed and rented trucks, a dream has finally come true! In 2004 Jeff Fiedler, former director of The Cavaliers, asked us “Did you bring your own truck??” Unfortunately we had to admit that the white monster had been rented, and completely decorated in Beatrix’ style.
If, however, the same question is posed again this summer, we will proudly be able to say that we have our own trucks! We have a 9.5 meter trailer that will be outfitted as our very own cook truck, or as we like to call it, an enlarged version of our Dutch “snack car”. As if this isn’t enough, we will also have a 14.5 meter long equipment trailer, which will receive a permanent Beatrix’ style makeover.
