Kidsgrove Scouts/Jeff Moore Percussion Clinic Report

| |

On Sunday 12th February, approximately 60 people congregated at Chesterton High School in Stoke-on-Trent to participate in a clinic hosted by Professor Jeff Moore and the Kidsgrove Scouts. Staff and members of several marching bands and drum corps (including Avengers, Donisthorpe Scouts, Poynton, Senators), as well as percussionists not involved in the marching music community, were treated to an entertaining and highly informative afternoon with Professor Moore.

The clinic was run in three parts. In the first part, Jeff talked about the fundamentals of marching percussion and discussed ways in which skills learned on one instrument (e.g., snare drum) transfer to other instruments (e.g., keyboard, tenors). In the second part, the audience members were led through a variety of exercises designed to help the percussionist develop his or her general playing ability and musical understanding. In the final part of the clinic Jeff presented the drumline of the Kidsgrove Scouts, bringing together all the ideas discussed earlier.
