Carol Shearer has ground beef up to her elbows.

She gently pats and molds a mixture of beef, breadcrumbs, eggs and seasonings into a loaf and places it next to the others.

Dozens of them.

Eighty pounds of meat lined up symmetrically on several industrial sized baking sheets. Enough meatloaf to feed 180 people on a Saturday evening.

Shearer is one of the many volunteers who prepare meals on the Crossmen food truck. During the corps’ final camp weekend in Penns Grove, N.J. on May 12-14, Shearer and four other volunteers cheerfully work together. They’re a team, just like the corps of young adults they support. As the Crossmen learn drill sets on the practice field, these volunteers from across the Mid-Atlantic states work diligently to prepare the corps a savory meal.
