Bound To The Corps

She doesn’t wear gaudy ribbons or hats stenciled with her daughter’s name like some of the others. She doesn’t wear oversized T-shirts adorned with a chest-sized screening of her daughter’s photo.

But make no mistake; Roxanne Speer is a drum corps mom.

Roxanne’s daughter, Jessica, plays timpani for the Phantom Regiment, the drum corps ranked third world class for Drum Corps International. The organization, which comprises 25 corps of up to 135 14- to 22-year-olds each, rarely is affiliated with schools or universities – so think of it as the Olympics of drum and brass competition.
