Buglers Sound A Fading Note

When Manchester Marine Ryan McCaughn was laid to rest last month, taps rang out in the cemetery. The song, written by a Union general during the Civil War, is sounded at every veteran’s funeral, as required by law.

But the young Navy corpsman who put the bugle to his lips that day didn’t play a note. A small black box in the bell of the instrument played a recording of taps while he pretended to blow on the instrument.
