In The News: Bret Harte High Hosting Drum Corps

The Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps has taken over Bret Harte High School — at least for the week.

The 135-member marching ensemble, made up of 14- to 21-year-old musicians and color guard members, has been practicing nearly nonstop on the school’s athletic fields since Monday. A sample schedule on their Web site lists start time at 8 a.m. and end time at 9:30 p.m., with breaks for lunch and dinner.

Members — who hail from across the country, plus a couple of international students — unloaded their instruments and food tents from giant trucks and buses after arriving and have been sleeping on the high school’s gym floor.
