Perfect weather with sunny skies and a breeze from the south greeted fans Sunday evening at Don and Nona Williams Stadium when the seventh annual Drums Along the Red Cedar (DARC) hosted eight drum and bugle corps from five states in the opening weekend of an eight-week tour for the young performers.

Drum corps fans — estimated at 1,800 strong — clapped, cheered and gave standing ovations to the more than 1,000 young musicians as they marched across the field, playing horns and drums and tossing colorful flags, rifles and other props to bring the crowd to its feet.

Phantom Regiment of Rockford, Ill., was awarded first place among the five Division One corps in the event. Second were Blue Knights of Denver, Colo., third, the Colts of Dubuque, Iowa; fourth, the Blue Stars of La Crosse and fifth, Pioneer of Milwaukee.
