In The News: Good Music Still Sounds Good To Old Ears

John Baumfalk’s eyes lit up when he saw The Cadets for the first time in more than a half century.

In 1934, he was a founding member of the drum and bugle corps in Garfield, N.J., which had its beginnings in a basement. Baumfalk, 89, last played – and saw the group – in 1946.

Thursday evening, among thousands of fans at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Baumfalk and sister Nellie Van Houten, 93, sat in the press box and watched the quarterfinals of the Drum Corps International World Championships, with 22 youth marching corps competing in the top division.
