Crossmen Mellophone Joins Cast Of ‘Odyssey’

It’s a safe bet that almost every drum corps member has, at one time or another, wished that she or he could march professionally. Crossmen mellophone player Kristen “KK” Richard has realized that dream by winning a spot with the brand new all-female marching stage show Odyssey, which will debut in Japan in October.

Odyssey will be a familiar idea to anyone who’s seen the Tony Award-wining show Blast!, which debuted in 1994 and brought full-bore drum corps onto the stage for the first time. Both Odyssey and Blast! are corps-style theatre productions that incorporate marching and concert percussion and wind instruments along with elements of color guard and intensely choreographed marching and dance routines in order to present an amped-up version of the drum corps fans love – but indoors, in air conditioning and comfortable seats. Best of all, the performers get paid to be there: this really is getting to march corps on a professional level.
