In The News: Rockland’s Long-Muffled Holy Family Defenders Drum And Bugle Corps Are Back

In 1974, Fred Schomburg put down his bugle, left town and joined the Army. Decades later, he and dozens more are back playing in the Rockland Defenders Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps, reviving the music of their youth.

“I didn’t play the bugle again until I started with the alumni corps,” said Schomburg, a 52-year-old Rockland native who now lives in Swansea.

“We were the grandchildren when we marched,” Schomburg said. “Now (some members are) the grandparents.”
