The Cascades would like to welcome back Josh Hinkel as the brass arranger for the 2009 season. Hinkel, a Dynasty USA artist and a member of the Vic Firth educational team, was brought onto the design team last season. The brass staff also includes Ryan Lewis, Jeremy Perman, Zach Smith and Devin White.

Josh Hinkel is currently Director of Bands and Performing Arts Department Chairman at Lake View High School in Lake View, South Carolina. He also serves as the staff arranger for the Coastal Carolina "Spirit of the Chanticleer" Marching Band.

In constant demand as an adjudicator, composer and arranger, his compositions and arrangements can be heard from concert halls of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. to the performing venues of DCI, WGI and BOA. Mr. Hinkel’s marching music affiliations include the Spirit of Atlanta, the Tampa Bay Thunder and numerous high schools and college programs throughout the United States. He holds the B.M. in Music Education from the University of South Carolina and the M.Ed in Secondary Education from Coastal Carolina University.

Ryan Lewis is a student at Portland Community College and will be transfering to the University of Oregon where he plans to pursue a degree in Journalism. Ryan started at the Cascades in the summer of 2002. He was a member of the corps for five consecutive years before finally aging out in 2006. He accepted a position on the music staff at Cascades in 2007. Since 2006 Ryan has been a visual and music instructor at Century High School in Hillsboro, OR.

Jeremy Permen was introduced to the marching arts in 2001 in joining with the Seattle Cascades. During his five year tenure with the corps, he served as a section leader, horn sargeant, and soloist, having the honor of receiving the "Rod Stubbs" award as well as "Most Outstanding" and "Best Marcher". This preceded his crowning achievement of becoming a DCI champion in 2006. He is currently pursuing a degree in Music Education and instructs various marching band programs throughout the Pacific Northwest.
