Rachel Gonzalez sounded like a typical color guard captain as she barked orders at flag-toting peers on a practice march across the Hammett Bowen Jr. Elementary School basketball court.
But the fifth-grader isn’t typical, and neither is the group she commands.
Gonzalez is the captain of the elementary school color guard, a unit organized by a Hammett Bowen teacher and a retired Korean War veteran.
