2009 Mandarins March Camp Report

| |

The Sacramento Mandarins March camp saw continued development of the 2009 program, Absolute. The next movement in the show, Absolute Joy, was read through by the brass line. This segment includes motifs from Beethoven’s "Ode to Joy," George Winston’s "Joy," and Michael W. Smith’s "Christmas Anthem".

The camp’s concluding ensemble rehearsal block also included a performance by the Mandarins Brass Academy (MBA). The MBA was established as an off-shoot from the Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps. It is intended as a way for the Mandarins to connect with local Sacramento music programs. The focus of the MBA has been to “Raise Brass Performance to an Artform”. Over the course of their season from September 2008 to March 2009, the MBA has attracted nearly 50 brass musicians to the monthly rehearsals. While the program has been aimed at the high-school and college level, participants have ranged in age from 9 to 21.
