In The News: Vanguard Drum Corps Gets Rush Out Of The Drill

After the third visit from the Atherton police, the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps decided it would have to split up its outdoor rehearsal at Menlo College.

The drum line, 30 strong, would relocate to the corners of campus to be muffled by trees. The front ensemble – marimbas, xylophone, timpani – would move to a courtyard surrounded by buildings. Only the horns would stay on the football field where all three sections began. That horn line alone could bring a fourth visit from the cops. When they do a breathing exercise, 76 members in sync, you can hear the wind blow on the other side of the field. A neighbor might call in a tornado warning.
