Two world champion contenders will face off against each other for the first time this season at July 21’s Battle on the Border VI at Blakemore Field.

Drum Corps International Tour Event Partner Ron Smith, who is also band director at Van Buren High, said the Santa Clara Vanguard of Santa Clara, Calif., and the Carolina Crown from Fort Mill, S.C., are both currently ranked in the top three on the DCI World Class circuit, which is the highest level of drum corps competition.

"They’re going to be pretty pumped," Smith said in a phone interview. "I predict that one of those two groups is going to win the world championship this year."
