Great Start To Mandarins Brass Academy

| |

The Mandarins Brass Academy (MBA) held their opening session for the new season on Sunday, September 6th at Cosumnes Oaks High School. The turnout was strong with 33 musicians attending. For most of the attendees, this was their first exposure to playing in a purely brass ensemble in a drum and bugle corps type setting. One of the most amazing things about this opening session was the absolutely perfect balance of musician across all sections of the brass ensemble, from high brass, middle voices and low brass.

The MBA began with introductions by the instructional staff including Dan Fong, Milt Gee, Bryan Stroh, Michelle Yamazaki, and Jim Tabuchi. The MBA members were then introduced to proper breathing techniques and articulation methods. From there they worked on some exercises and were introduced to a couple of this year’s performance pieces. One of the anomalies of the MBA is that their first performance is in December, which means the MBA had to begin rehearsing Christmas music in September in the hot Sacramento sun (only 110 shopping days left!).
