Joint Vlamo And NMF Clinic For Field Band Foundation

| |

More than 60 tutors from Field Bands from all over South Africa will participate to the annual FBF workshop, this time held in Plettenberg Bay. Vlamo sends out again 4 Flemish teacher that will give, in collaboration with a Norwegian (Norwegian Music Federation) and South African (FBF) team an intensive training on new FBF tutors. This exchange program was supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Flemish Government, which finds in South Africa a preferential partner for culture exchange.

The program of the 10-day clinic is a follow-up of the previous two editions, but goes a step further this time. Bart Tienpont (Vlamo program coordinator) has prepared, in close cooperation with the NMF and FBF team, an educational package in which the teaching of methodologies for creating a field show is of prior importance. These include show design, M&M, marching percussion, melodic percussion, music arranging, musical improvisation and conducting. Didier Rosez and Katleen Vanhaverbeke are responsible for the show design and M&M package, while Wim De Vlaminck and Ruben Cooman will focus on melodic and marching percussion. The Norwegian team is taking care of the musical program.

Most of all, the African character is primary importance! And how is this better expressed than by the energetic dancers in the Field Bands? That is why the two South African dancers Aubrey Moikanyo and Musa Hlatswayo (a professional dancer from Durban) will fill in this part.

The Field Band Foundation (http://www.fieldband.org.za/) gives children from the townships new opportunities in life. Music, show and dance is very attractive for these kids and these topics are thus easily integrated in an educational program that also works intensively on themes like life skills and HIV prevention. Thousands of children are reached in this way and there are requests to found new Field Bands all over the country every month. That is way there is a great need of new teachers for these bands. This ‘TEACH THE TEACHER’ program is therefore a must for this new generation of Field Band instructors.

The learned methodologies will immediately be put in practice since the participants will create and practice an attractive show themselves. The theme is “MOTOWN” and the 10 min show will contain the following pieces: ABC of The Jackson Five, MY GIRL of William Robinsson and Ronnie White and a drum break arranged by Wim and Ruben. Also a street show (parade show) and concert are planned for this workshop.
