In The News: Corps Of The Matter

In the shimmering heat of a muggy Tuesday afternoon, clusters of deeply-tanned, scantily-clad musicians lugged silver-plated instruments toward the shade of the Weede Center for water and and a hurried lunch.

The heat index was hovering above 100-degrees, and despite the light wind wafting across campus even the hearty, native shrubbery wilting in the mid-day heat.

The sun-baked kids are members of the Boston Crusaders, a touring drum and bugle corps based in Massachusetts. The Crusaders stopped to practice their routine and rest while on their way to a competition in the suburbs of Tulsa Wednesday night. The caravan of buses, college-age students and equipment vans rolled into town from Dubuque, Iowa, in the wee hours before dawn Monday. After what amounts to a cat nap, they hit the practice field running.
