A good drum and bugle corps is an art unto itself: An elaborate dance of patterns and pageantry, where musicians and color guards fall into ever shifting, ever changing formations that range from squares and triangles, to circles and blocks, underscored by complex rhythms and big brass sounds.

"It’s been called marching band on steroids," said Brad Furlano, executive director of the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps of La Crosse, Wis., which will perform Tuesday at Metamora High School with seven other groups of various skill levels from across the United States.
