2011 Cavaliers January Camp Report

Less than a week after the world rang in the New Year, brass and percussion hopefuls gathered in Rosemont, Ill., as The Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps held its 2011 January Callback Camp. As much of the United States saw severe weather and travel delays, the corps moved closer to solidifying the 2011 brass and percussion roster during the three-day camp (Jan 7-9).

Percussion caption head Dr. Brian Tinkel saw a distinct uptick in talent, preparation and performance across the board. “My team sent those auditioning in November and December home with very specific feedback regarding areas of improvement.” The January Callback Camp gave us a chance to track the progress of individuals within this extremely talented group, and it allowed us to further evaluate those individuals vying for membership. Dr. Tinkel added “we’ve established a winter/spring technique program that helps us take a structured approach to musical training and education as we move closer to May 20, the beginning of Pre-Tour.” The application of that technique program is naturally learning and performing the percussion book, and we were able to read through portions of Michael McIntosh’s and Alan Miller’s challenging, unique compositions over the weekend.”
